Our award-winning Employment Taxes team is looking for a graduate to join the growing (highly experienced) team to enable them to expand their services further across the UK.
Schedule: Monday to Friday
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Application deadline: 14/06/2024
Expected start date: 02/09/2024
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be working with experienced members of the team advising UNW clients on all matters relating to employment taxes.
A lot of the work can be project based, so no two weeks are the same. UNW clients range in size from small owner managed businesses with just a few employees, to global household names with tens of thousands of employees.
In addition to becoming an expert in this specialist tax area, you will undertake training over a four year period under a Level 7 professional apprenticeship course to obtain your Chartered Tax Advisor qualification.
You’ll be doing a lot of project based work for our clients and will be supported by senior members of the team during your training.
Projects typically involve data analysis, review of company policies and report writing. You will also gain knowledge of relevant tax legislation and you will use this as a basis for drafting advice to clients. The work will include some direct contact with clients and government departments, in face to face and virtual meetings and over the telephone.
As the department relies totally on consultancy work arising from client work, there is no typical day in the life of an Employment Taxes adviser, and so you will need to be flexible in times when client needs are higher but also adaptable and resourceful at some times when the focus is on building client relationships and identifying where client needs are in the future.
Some recent examples of client work include:
- Speaking with a client in the engineering sector who had an employee working from home in Sweden and advising them on the tax and National Implications in both countries;
- Advising a technology client on the latest ideas on company cars including the benefits to the employee and employer on the use of “salary sacrifice”;
- Advising an employer in the education sector about specific payments made to employees and what their reporting requirements were; and
- Meeting with an employer in construction to speak about the engagement of their self-employed workers, researching case law and advising them whether there was a risk that they should be recategorized as employees and then carrying out a training session for their finance team.
