What is Tax?

Helping people and businesses get tax right.

Our tax team supports individuals and companies with everything from completing tax returns to planning big business decisions in the most tax-efficient way. It’s about understanding the rules, staying up to date with changes, and helping clients make informed choices.

What does that mean in real life?

You could be preparing tax returns, looking into how a new tax rule could affect a business, or sitting in on a client meeting. You’ll deal with lots of information and quickly become a valuable part of the team.

Most of our tax team is based in our Newcastle office, so there’s always someone nearby to ask for help or talk through a tricky question. It’s a collaborative, friendly environment – perfect for building confidence and growing your knowledge early in your career.

Why it’s a great start to your career:

  • You’ll build knowledge in a complex, interesting area that’s grounded in the real world
  • You’ll work towards a professional qualification that opens doors across finance
  • You’ll be supported to explore the areas of tax you’re best at and enjoy most
  • You’ll develop a wide skillset, from analysis and research to client communication
  • You’ll gain early responsibility and quickly see the value of your work

Is Tax for you?

If you’re organised, have an eye for detail, and like the idea of solving real problems for real people, tax could be a great fit.

Many of our apprentices didn’t originally set out to work in tax – but through a week’s work experience here at UNW, they discovered it was exactly the kind of environment they were looking for.

If you’re studying subjects like maths or business – or even just enjoy keeping up with the news – you might be surprised by how much tax appeals to you.

Try it out first

Not sure if tax is right for you? Our one-week work experience placement is a great way to get a feel for what tax – and life at UNW – is really like.

You’ll spend time with different colleagues, shadow people doing the job, and get a clearer idea of what suits you best. For many of our apprentices, that first-hand experience was what helped them decide to choose tax.

We’re now accepting applications for roles in our audit and tax teams, starting in September 2025.

Apply using the form below, or get in touch at recruitment@unw.co.uk if you have any questions.
