Work-related training

On the eighth day of Taxmas, we share with thee some informative lyrics on the subject of employment tax relief on training costs (to the seasonal tune of Slade’s ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’)....

‘Tis the season for wishing happiness and good health
As I put another certificate on my shelf
It’s for work related training
For which my employer pays
And it’s beneficial in so many ways

Oh yes, it’s work-related training
Designed to improve and upskill
Helps us look to the future
And there’s no tax on the bill

Well, the wording of the tax exemption’s clear
It’s to be useful for your work, so there’s good cheer
It can help improve performance
Develop skills and help meet goals
And give that all important focus to your career

Oh yes, it’s work-related training
Designed to improve and upskill
Helps us look to the future
And there’s no tax on the bill

IT’S CHRISTMASSSSSSSSS

Finishing with the detail, work- related training is defined as a training course or other activity which is designed to impart, instil, improve or reinforce any knowledge, skills, or personal qualities which:

• are, or are likely to prove, useful to the employee when performing his/her duties or
• will qualify or better qualify the employee to undertake the employment, or to participate in charitable or voluntary activities arising through the employment.
The exemption also covers certain related travel expenses and subsistence costs.
